Awareness, Awareness, Awareness
The mind is amazing, but has a few inherent flaws that keep us struggling and miserable.
One of the amazing things it does is to extrapolate new interpretations and meaning about our reality based on just a few pieces of data.
That has led to many of the greatest creations of human existence, using logic, creativity, imagination we have created societies, art, music, science, technology, architecture, engineering and so much more.
However, on a personal level we often confuse our projections, ideas, opinions and beliefs with reality.
If we were perfectly logical and rational that might work okay, but we aren’t. We are primarily built for survival so our interpretations are always run against our fundamental survival criteria.
Mindfulness meditation can seem like a strange exerise.
We place our attention onto something going on in the present moment, like our breathing or the sensations in our body.
Then when we notice our attention has been dragged away but the workings of the mind we start again.
But one of the things we are doing is starting to distinguish between what’s really real – i.e. our sensations – as opposed to what’s just in our heads.
Developing awareness of our own thinking, our beliefs, our opinions, our judgments and seeing the difference between them and what’s actually real is the simple path to clarity.
In the second half of the class we also introduce the meditation technique of See, Hear, Feel.
